D&B LOCANDA DEL FIUME

locandadelfiume.jpg
Those who think to Campania and its magnificent places and views, think also to Amalfi Coast, Penisola Sorrentina and Naples.
Only the happy few know, and therefore, enjoy the hidden jewel of the Southern part of Campania, il Cilento.
To describe the Cilento is very hard for me.
Which words should I use to transmit the limitless charm of this territory, its origin and history which is closer to Greek than to Romans and the coast with the unbelieveble colors of the sea. The sea which, by the way, impressed also Hemingway.
And its sweet hills where olive trees hug rich vineyards and the small hilltowns, even cuter and surely more genuine of the small town along the coast.
A smart basis point to explore and discover the small hidden treasures of Cilento is Pisciotta and the magical D&B is the D&B LA LOCANDA DEL FIUME.
The structure is the result of a perfect renewal of an ancient flour mill of four centuries ago.
The soul of this D&B is Lady Sonia, ready in every moment to take care of you and to satisfy your requests.
The sea is not so far, about five minutes by car.
The dinner is the most delicious moment of your stay.
The cucina cilentana is unique and surely not similar to the Neapolitan cooking.
Here the secret is the high quality of every ingredient coming from the sea and from the orchards.
First of all, the excellent olive oil, one of the best in the whole world and Lady Sonia makes her olive oil and I suggest that you buy several bottles so that you carry home a bit of Cilento.
But, anyway, you carry home a bit of Cilento because it will be forever with you in your memory and in your eyes. I am sure you will come back here soon.

D&B LA GINESTRA in Santa Maria del Castello

ginestra2.jpg
When I talk about Penisola Sorrentina, often I say “my beloved Penisola Sorrentina”, as I lived there for many wonderful and unforgettable years. Therefore, when I have to describe this magical place I see before my eyes the movie of my memory.
Well. Now we are in an hidden part of Penisola Sorrentina because, you have to know, Penisola Sorrentina does not mean only Sorrento and only the beautiful coast, but Penisola Sorrentina means also its sweet hills and, obviously, it’s going into these hills that you can enjoy the best and most spectacular views of the Bay of Naples and of part of Amalfi Coast.
Vico Equense is the gate of Penisola Sorrentina and Vico Equense counts 13 hamlets, from the beach until the hill towns close to the top of the mountain named Monte Faito.
The territory of Vico Equense touchs both the bays, Bay of Naples and Bay of Salerno.
We are in one of the hill hamlets of Vico Equense: Santa Maria del Castello.
The car is strongly suggested.
Santa Maria del Castello is a balcony over Positano; very close to the famous destinations of the day trips: Positano, Sorrento, Amalfi, Pompei, Napoli, and abosultely far from the crowds and the noises of the coast.
Do you like to walk along the paths !?! Well, go to Positano walking along a not easy path and then . . . tell me !
The D&B is D&B LA GINESTRA. The kind and pretty ladies can speak English fluently; you will have no problem to communicate with them and become their friends a few minutes after you meet them.
The Bed part consists of 7 very large rooms.
The breakfast is a delicious moment and, by the way, do not miss to taste their honey, especially miele di castagno.
The Dinner part enables you to meet the true typical “cucina sorrentina” that does not mean in a mandatory way fish and seafood.
That’s why the offering of the chef is pasta e fagioli and scialatielli con pomodorini del Vesuvio. Scialatielli is a local handmade fresh pasta.
You go on with a plateau of cheese where there are the fresh fiordilatte, made using cow’s milk and a very aged cheese, very typical and strongly local, named Provolone del Monaco. Why this name ? Ask and you will receive more than one reply.
As dessert, ask for delizia al limone.
That’s a smart way to live a short slot of your life in Penisola Sorrentina, far from the madding crowd and enjoy the location and feel a local rather than one of the million of tourists that come here every year.

a great wine of Campania: a’ Scippata

vigneto3.jpg
I came back from a guided wine tour in the province of Salerno, the Southern province of Campania and I discovered a great red wine and now I’d like to share with you my report about this excellent wine.
The location of the vineyard is close to Paradise. Oh, yes !
We are in a very small hamlet, its name is Capitignano of Tramonti the small hilltown up Maiori, one of the small towns of Amalfi Coast.
The view from here is, in my honest opinion, unique in the world.
The winery is GIUSEPPE APICELLA and the wine that I tasted is ‘A SCIPPATA 2004.
‘A SCIPPATA is a blend of two local grapes: Tintore (80%) and Piedirosso (20%).
Tintore grapes are male and strong; if alone it could be even rude, so that it needs a sweet stroke from a gentle hand, and this is the role of the female partner, Piedirosso.
Its aging process is in large oaks but also in barriques.
The color is a strong red. My nose smelled the cherries.
My mouth told me “thank you” as I finished the first glass sip by sip.
Its best match is with red meats and aged cheese.
